Sticky header for important notices

We use the Awesome Sticky Header WordPress plugin to display important notices in a thin bar that sticks to the top of pages as visitors scroll through content.

This is usually set to display a short notice about applications being open for the following year’s programme.

Enabling the sticky header

Configure the sticky header’s content: this is done via a special WordPress Menu item.

Within the WordPress dashboard, navigate to Appearance -> Menus. Within the Edit Menus tab, select the Sticky Header menu to edit, then press the Select button to the right of the menu selection dropdown.

If no menu with this name is available, this can be created from the same dashboard page by following the link create a new menu, then making sure that the menu name is Sticky Header (this can be set to something else, as long as the plugin is then configured to use the desired menu).

If the Sticky Header was simply disabled in the past, without deleting its content, the Sticky Header menu being edited should contain a single item, whose type is Custom Link (shown in light grey on the item’s button).

By pressing the arrow-down icon on the item’s button, edit the Navigation Label (this is the text that will be displayed in the sticky header) and the associated URL, then press the Save Menu button.

Otherwise, if no menu items are configured, select Custom Links from the tab’s sidebar, enter URL and Link Text, then press the Add to Menu button. The menu item should now appear in the Menu Structure section of the page and the menu can be saved by pressing the Save Menu button.

Once the menu has been configured, navigate to the Plugins area of the WordPress dashboard, then activate the Awesome Sticky Header by DevCanyon plugin. If a new menu has been created earlier through the process above, configure the plugin to use the new menu: click on the configure link for this plugin on the plugins list page, then on the Header tab. The desired menu can be selected from the Choose menu dropdown list on this tab.

Disabling the sticky header

Navigate to the Plugins area of the WordPress dashboard, then deactivate the Awesome Sticky Header by DevCanyon plugin. There is no need to modify the associated menu, as this can be left in place for the future and updated with a new message when re-enabling the plugin.
